Status Quo
Whats the Status right now ?
In the last years i was quite busy with composing/producing music for advertising and media. But beside this work i collected every cool sound, every unheard mixing idea and every beautiful melody which came to my mind. If i now look into the folders of my harddrive ill easily find dozens of preproduced tracks, ideas, grooves. Nothing finished yet, but a lot of potential audio jewels.
What to do with such a mess ? And what to do with the experience i got from working with so many styles for advertising ? What to do with nowadays audio possibilites which would have been a “dream studio with several hired guys” some years ago and would have been absolutely impossible to have more than a decade ago…? (Ill talk about the technical details later for shure)
Another problem with those snippets and recordings was that there was no common style to them, no big scheme, not even the same “sound” of mixing. They where all just to different to simply put them on one album even if you´d “remix” them all.
Then i realised that I never did a concept album. Something which is not a mere “best of” collection of the last years but more like a collection of about twelve different angles of view onto one common topic. And that was the challenge i got hooked up with. Some days later i had a topic i thought to be ideal - not to cheesy but diversive and a bit technical as well… No, i wont tell you that topic yet… It doesnt even matter for the future consumer of the album - it is just my own guideline to not get lost in the varieties of sounds and styles and its there to not make it too easy for me ![]()

I don’t dig the idea of a concept album anyway - unless there are very good reasons for doing so. In the end all that counts is providing excellent music with no intended fillers. That alone should make up for the ‘perfect’ concept.
Good luck!

Of course there will be no “filler”
only some more exotic sounding tracks which are hard to categorize and wont be played on high rotation in the mainstream radio…

My Favourit: Widescreen. A varied concept. I think you are headed in the right direction… And now a new album? I can hardly wait!
And I know the problem to finalize a project: All good ideas, satisfactory start, and there is no prospect of an end, how long will you require to compose a song? There is no hurry.

Please yourself!

well entropy - i´m a bit puzzled, too.
Widescreen - A Concept Album.
Mission Horizon - A Concept Album.
Evolution - A Concept Album.
Evolution was done in the exact same style as Widescreen - which also was a concept album in my opinion - it had a mixture of Trance/Techno Titles as well as diving into the breakbeat/garage direction.
mission horizon even was a concept album. it was even accompanied by the Music Videos on which Rolf and Not-namegiving-Part went to the Planet Mars.
this world is yours and (rochus) Unexpected were no concept albums, just some tracks that fittet into. quoting wikipedia: “In popular music, a concept album is an album which is “unified by a theme, which can be instrumental, compositional, narrative, or lyrical”.[1] Most often they are pre-planned (conceived) and with all songs contributing to a single overall theme or unified story, this plan or story being the concept. This is in contrast to the standard practice of an artist or group releasing an album consisting of a number of unconnected songs performed by the artist. Given that the suggestion of something as vague as an overall mood often tags a work as being a concept album, a precise definition of the term proves problematic.”

The two singles Deep Down Below and Horizon from the Mission Horizon album were just connected by their videos which shared the same story. Even the lyrics didnt have anything to do with a trip to mars beforehand. The album title later reflected the story of the music videos and some sound effects on the album have been chosen with those videos in mind - not a common theme for the album.
Widescreen also had two songs which shared a story in their music videos, but the whole album didnt have anything to do with FBI hunting guys with a tape
And the other singles/videos about the time before summer on a german beach and about a remote control for real life - well, no common topic at all…
and concerning evolution… well thats just a blasphemous theory about apes becoming man which obviously is absolutely wrong because we all know that god made us men from mud and women from the mens ribs. No, just kidding, we all know that the flying spaghetti monster created mankind.
so, back to topic… i still am very proud of most of the songs on widescreen and mission horizon, but these albums were no concept albums to my mind.
The theme, the concept of the upcoming album is for now just a guideline for my work. I have no guarantee that it will work or even improve the collection of sounds and melodies i have for now, but i think its worth trying.
And if it wont work out you all will witness it “live” here in this blog. Maybe i start painting then

HE,
All albums are very good collections, but sometimes it seems to be a concept cause nice crossovers between all tracks are there! It is an good possibillity to connecting a lot af works and so it sounds like only one session: a new masterpiece is born…
By the way, where can we get “evlution” !?

Do you plan an album like the last ones (”in the mix” or every track enclosed)?
11. May 2008 at 19:41
I am quite certain that the songs will be each for its own. For one because i hope my concept will “shine” through each of them and a “mix” is not needed. Then all songs will be “finished” in a relatively short period of time by just one man and therefore should share a same sound concerning mixing/producing. Furthermore many people nowadays like to use the “shuffle mode” on their ipods…
I also have an idea i will try out concerning the endings and beginnings of ALL of the songs which should improve the listening experience when listening in shuffle mode… but for now… what songs ??
12. May 2008 at 10:42
aren’t there any songs/song-ideas, which you already like that much, that you will put them on the album ?
12. May 2008 at 12:29
Of course… But be patient - it will all be described in this blog
12. May 2008 at 20:01
i want big band sound, i want marimbas, i want klezmer!
13. May 2008 at 00:49
Yeah, the flying spaghetti monster! Or else, we would be all retarded fish frogs.
Will there be some hearing samples? (-> Hör-Bar)
13. May 2008 at 08:44
there will be. the samples i mean - not the klezmer…

To harp on this stuff with a concept album. I think the best album was “widescreen” in a way what I understand under a concept album. Not so much because of the videos to the singles with some touch of movies but the whole thing with the quotes from the movies (I know this was also used on “This World is Yours”) and some sound snippets from some movies as well. I think that this is quite a concept in combination with the title of the album, ins’t it?
To the thing what was mentioned above with the songs apart or mixed together to one big “title”. I think an album with one big song is a better idea for a concept album as seperated titles (my opinion ;)) because with titles in one piece you have more possibilites to tell a story. This worked very well on the mentioned “widescreen” with the “soft” mixing between the individually titles.
Wish ya a good start in a short week

Always your working with samples sounds interesting. What about a vocalist like Kristina Totzek (redemption) or angela caran (reality). To choose a favoritesong is difficult, too, for me “break the silence” it is! You have increased the value while playing the song in a harmonically way, no moment eaquals an other. Perfect…

I hope we will hear some nice voices on the new album?
15. May 2008 at 13:31
we will see about voices when the songs are selected… but i think that not too many songs will really need vocals…

Guys
My experience with RMB ends with Misson Horison… You write something about “Evolution” Could You tell me what this is about?
(shame on me:))
16. May 2008 at 09:03
for any information about my former project “RMB” go to this site - there is also a great FORUM-BOARD there…

16. May 2008 at 15:28
as far as i know, “Evolution” was never released in any form. maybe someone will post the tracklist of “Evolution” on the formerly-known-as-rmb-musik.de so that you see what it would have been if it was released.
16. May 2008 at 15:53
As far as I know, many tracks could be in the planned “RMB - Evolution” album. And I don’t know if someone know the tracklist.
It could be some single release like:
April,
Beauty of Simplicity,
Touch the Sky,
Feel the Flame,
Gangster,
Killer.
Other tracks could come from liveset and I know some never released tracks that maybe were planned for this album:
Time will tell,
Free to believe,
Chase the dragon,
Classic forward,
Limestar.
And many other tracks that can be on the Rolf’s 2 TB hard drive
16. May 2008 at 16:45
the 2TB are of course not ONE harddrive

and concerning evolution i can alter a famous quote: i could tell you but i´d have to kill you. and destroy your computer. your ipod. your family´s computers and ipods. your friends´ and ex-friends´gear and your pet. and then… someone still would sue me
16. May 2008 at 17:03
Would you be so bad?
17. May 2008 at 12:07
That’S one of the most problem here: “Copyright reserved!”
So I hope we will become an official version of “Evolution” anytime.
What’s on in a strange case of an lightning strike and all the 2TB are destroyed? Have you any pets?

05. March 2009 at 22:52
