Drumprogramming and the sound of the 1176
Yesterday, with the comments about fast tempo in mind, i programmed a little beat with the ezDrummer plug in with several variations. The tempo is 148 bpm

Nice, but not too interesting… so i put my favourite drum-smash-compressor on it (an 1176 clone with “all buttons in mode”) cut the deep bass, added a 909 kick and some other sounds and that is the result

Listen to what the 1176 clone compressor does to the drums and the reverb of the drum-room and you might understand why compressors are amongst my favourite tools. I always liked this smashed drumsound which reminds of led zepplin and is used in small doses in most harder rock mixes. You might notice a similarity concerning the drumsound to a track in the 90s with a sample about “women and kids”
but in those days i only used sample-loops which already were slammed. I didnt know about the right tools to make such a sound by myself. Today with a 1176 clone and a great drumsampler like ezDrummer i make my own loops
BTW: I am really looking forward for toontrack to release Superior 2.0 this june - its the BIG version of ezDrummer and will shure make me programming drums for days

What about some 303 sounds? That would be cool. Did you ever put some really present acid in your tracks? I just can’t rememberfor the moment. Well, or maybe, you just don’t like it…

you didnt hear a lot of 303-sounds in my stuff as the first “wave” of such sounds brought a lot of low-talented noisy stuff to the “scene”… i talk about early/mid-90s…
of course there were artists and songs i already admired… hardfloor comes to mind or “music is a polished crown…” (a little quiz… what song do i mean ?) but the majority of “acid” tracks with lots of “303″ during the 90s was not meant for MY pleasure…
but as you might see in the next days/weeks i am not too fond of using sounds which already had a lot of use in the dance scene… id rather record some blown bottles through lots of effect-devices or so… we´ll see soon

Turkish Bazar… The music was new, black, polished chrome and came over the summer like liquid night…?

..and there even is a cool bundle with waves renaissance maxx… although the renaissance eq + compressor are not the up-to-date processors full of character like waves API, SSL or the UAD stuff they are good workhorses. And the renaissance bass is often used by me to seperate a bass from a kickdrum… The Ren. Vox is a go-to compressor for Vocals AND lead synths for example… But the best part is that youll get the Impulse Response Reverb IR-L with the full IR-1 library with it… this is my main reverb for all stereo sources and natural reverb

how does it sound compared to the 1176LN plugin? is it worth using the hw clone ?

especially if you slam it (using a lot of compression) or if you go into saturation or even distortion, there is a significant differance to plug ins… a good budget solution might be using a plug in for compression and a simple but good piece of hardware for saturation…
