Flowerpot and Drum ´n Bass
Today i was sitting on my balkony, looking at an empty flowerpot as i wondered what it would sound like if i ´d insert a recording of thumping that flowerpot into a drum ´n bass track i was working on.
So i did.

wow amazing idea. all fits together. great sound and tune….

Nice idea, but the mix is definitely not my cup of tea.
Just *hurts*, sorry!

Very nice idea to use the flowerpot!! Maybe a solobreak in the middle would be nice? Hope for more nice samples!

I like this track a lot, especialy the guitar.
But I think the syn.bass (00.00:38…)sounds a bit to trashy, the sound isn’t suitable… I hope a some critique is ok…?

Rolf, regarding your talent and possibilities, this track is really poor. Put some more sprit into it. More melodies and passages please…
22. May 2008 at 00:09
buy more flowerpots! why is everybody buying synths???
22. May 2008 at 11:50
This is just the beginning of the song and there are more melodies and harmonies following it as it is suitable for this style
And i can tell you one day after this snippet that the melodies are to stay and the d´nb breakbeat will have to go… Ill soon experiment with other drumkits in this high-tempo… maybe even a collection of other selfmade percussion samples…
tomek, what do you mean by “passages” ?
…the synthbass is a Vanguard (see other post) that i gave a “second chance”
22. May 2008 at 15:33
*sigh* Great sampling-idea… but the snippet doesn’t even suit my taste really. Think it’s the brakbeat-loop that sounds a little bit overused and outworn to me.
You did ask for opinions, didn’t you?
BTW: Why do all the people in here comment in english, even if most of them do not come from english-speakin countries as far as I suppose…?
22. May 2008 at 15:35
Uh, Rolf - I forgot. Perhaps you would like to take a look at this plugin which informs your readers about new entries to threads they commented to…. very useful I can tell
22. May 2008 at 16:20
concerning the plug in…. martin! should we have this ?
and about the breakbeat - yes, its a very stereotype-ish beat that i tried with that song to get a contrast to the (later) beautiful guitar and melody.
for you all to know… this blog is not to spread some snippets of an already finished album, but to show the process of getting there… that includes many snippets of songs which will NOT be on any record at all…
its like in many professions - in the end you just need 10% of all work, but you dont know which 10% while you are working on it
22. May 2008 at 17:30
Rolf, by saying “passages” I mean transitions between variating melodies in a track (not just one-chord line).
22. May 2008 at 21:18
Okay Rolf,
.
now you own a great orchestra. Why not surprising us with more members of your band
BTW.: Tell use your recommendations concerning microphones, please. (post)
22. May 2008 at 23:18
I agree - mics are a pretty interesting plot!
23. May 2008 at 08:41
I dont have such a big selection of mics… one akg 414 as a main condenser, a pair of small condensers for stereo work, an sm 58 (without the front-sphere quite like an 57) for amps and a cheap “t-bone” condenser mic as a room mic. oh and dont forget my edirol R-09 which i often use to record weird stuff (and doing field recording of course)
In the studios i have been recording i enjoyed using brauner or neumann mics for vocals or acoustic guitar but i dont do soft ballads with shiny vocals very often so such an investment wasnt necessary, yet…
I think with a decent big condenser (not the $ 100,- “china” crap) and a good preamp you will get quite far these days
23. May 2008 at 13:20
Don’t care about what is suitable for ANY kind of music!
23. May 2008 at 16:24
i like like that snippet. yeah. like it more than the 99bpm above.
and i would prefere a more “crashing” snare.
)
so sad thats its so short
more “Chuck” than “klack” (do you know what i mean?
25. May 2008 at 21:14
hey Rolf,
I just love this track! Really looking forward to hear any new sounds from you again.
thanks

I do not believe that it is a flowerpot - I believe this is your ashtray! - even if it is, so I like it!!!
26. May 2008 at 11:03
oh, you are right i have the bad habit of giving all my ashtrays names… may i introduce your cigarette to “ashley the hungry” ?
no, as a nonsmoker i dont have such a big selection of ashtrays -and none is named “flowerpot” :))

With every example you prove that you are the best musician ever! You can compose hundrets of songs and all of them will be kickin’!
Anyway, Jupiter Jesus is awesome, I hope that this song (and others) will be included in yours new album!
