classic trance…

here is a cut of a little classic trance piece i am working on right now…

and once again i have to add: the purpose of showing “footprints” rather than fragements of the finished product later this year is to give an insight into the process - to show how ideas, sounds, melodies, arrangements grow, evolve, are exchanged to get a final piece of music that is worth to be called a “song” rather than a “track”…

  2. Toni Says:

sounds interesting…reminds me to “mind of the wonderful (RMB rmx)”

  3. Tom Says:

    gekauft!

  4. Tomek Says:

Sounds different and quite soft. There aren’t so many specific “MadeByRolf” elements in this track.

  5. entropy Says:

    Nice. =)

  6. Jakob Says:

  7. F-André Says:

Erinnert mich etwas an Cafe del Mar ;) *g*

    Weiter so!

  8. talex Says:

    Wiedererkennungswert… = 0

many specific “MadeByRolf” elements in this track. = 100%

ne eher ruhige Nummer, und entspannt - also Mission erfüllt!

    ach und-
-detuned??? Keine Ahnung was du damit meinst!

    Haben will wenns fertig ist!

  10. teddy Says:

  13. Marc Says:

I like the beginning and the first part of the break. Sounds really good and grim, I like it. But the rest is to arbitrarily. It can be made from everyone… But, hey, it’s a snippet… ;)

  14. lilacfairy Says:

I like it a lot, but I agree with most here, that it lacks something recognizable, something, that makes it special and differentiates it from all the other classic trance stuff out there. Maybe an instrument would be nice?

  15. lilacfairy Says:

I meant another instrument of course, something more exotic maybe?

  16. Martin Says:

I like the start and the part after the break although the piano is far too flat, easy. It need more ‘deep’ sounds…

  17. alex Says:

OT: where is the sample on RMB - Troubled from?

  18. Heiko Says:

melody sounds pretty great but it’s maybe a bit uniform. it needs just another kick. :)

  19. Sascha Says:

RMB is back!!! Erinnert mich so an die tracks von dem Album “this world is yours”
    ….mit andern worten….klasse track!!!!

  20. quaoar Says:

btw.: thanks for doing this Rolf and bearing all our comments. :-)
It is really interesting to see how the album evolves.

  21. Tony Says:

  22. timon Says:

i like it. thanks for sharing!!

  23. Marc Says:

  24. Altarnax Says:

I like this song :D, but i think that something is still missing from it.
The main beat reminds me “deep down below (club mix)”…a bit.
Maybe with a little vocal (or with a little snippet from a dialogue:)), and with a few deeper (a bit more dynamic) bass it would be perfect!:D

    Regards!:D

  25. Slavenowsky Says:

    very nice!!!

  26. V-12/Tropyx Says:

I can say one thing - this is awesome! Maybe not kickin’ as Touch The Sky, but still powerful classic Trance music. I really wish to hear some of the tunes like this one in your new album Rolf!

  27. hor80 Says:

    @alex:
    Al Pacino, Carlito’s Way

  28. hor80 Says:

great cut btw! keep it up! :)

  29. D.Machine Says:

It’s nice to hear such a melody (reminds me of old times). The main synth really makes the snippet a bit similar to “Cafe del Mar (Kid Paul Remix)” (and maybe others that don’t come to my mind). But here is less delay and reverb, and things like fading and the whole arrangement (don’t find the right words right now) make it definitely RMB-like (a bit like “Wonders of Live”?).
I love the part where the melody of the main synth goes down and the piano goes up. That’s the sound I missed for years!
The piano is really hard to hear when the “Cafe del Mar” lead starts. But I just listened to it with my 50€ speakers in the office. And when the lead melody goes down, I can spot the piano better.
This snippet is not as progressive and modern as the other ones, but nevertheless great.
Maybe you could make the break more complex or add some aggressive and distorted elements (like in “Stretching the seconds”) which partially continue after the break. But now I seem to head for a track like “Spring”, and I would accept if you didn’t want to make such tracks any more. Just make it your may.
    I can’t wait the album!

PS: Could you maybe upload the snippets as MP3-files? Everytime I want to listen to them again I have to open the browser and find the right page of the blog.

  30. christopher Says:

    hi rolf!

its a very nice track you are working on…

the only thing i would change is the piano. in my opinion it should be weay more louder. i think the melody is pretty epic.
and i like that it variates between deep notes and high notes.

maybe you could add some acoustic guitar to the high synth notes that you put over the appregiato (dam, dam… dam, dam… dam, dam…)
    lol… hope my grammar works…

oh, and do not try tp sound “zeitgemäß”.
everybody does that. they sound all the same. stay the “sound” you are.
that is why i enjoy your music so much.

    keep up the good work!!!

  31. D.Machine Says:

    Hi,

I’ve got another remark at the role of the piano and the arpeggiating “Cafe del Mar” synth.
Maybe you could keep the synth more reduced (by sustain, release etc.) until its melody goes deeper. Then the piano could be heard better. And when the melody goes up again, you could keep the synth as it is now (or a little more in the foreground) but maybe leave out the piano.

These are just some ideas from an amateur producer.

  32. V-12/Tropyx Says:

    I just need more aoaoaoah!

  33. MADCAT Says:

    Hi Rolf,
    Big fan over here!

I miss so much that Spring/Whispering/Reality/Redemption/Chakka Chakka etc flavor!

This track sounds good, but it doesn’t have that SOMETHING that you and Farid were able to insert in your 90’s songs!

Looking forward to listening to your masterpieces again!!!

  34. Jan Says:

nice but too cheesy for you.

remember the 90ties are over ;o)

  35. Rolf Says:

this was just for fun and wont be on the upcoming album…

  36. Jahrelanger Fan Says:

  37. Timon Says:

    Schade

  38. Rolf Says:

i dont want to put 20 tracks on one cd - there will be other trance songs on it :)

  39. The Chaser Says:

Why won’t be released this track? This one is so nice, i want it! :D
    Sounds very cool.

    Greetings from Romania.

  40. Thomas Says:

Great melody, it is typical for your unique style and I love it!!! In this case, I have to cancel my two orders of your CD…:-)…

  41. Rolf Says:

its not on the cd because it was sounding too… ordinary…
and the style sounded like it was produced several years ago… it wouldnt fit… it was a bit like the repetition of a TV series and i was trying to discover new untold stories for you ;)

  42. Yannick Says:

So just as I said - for the trashcan?

  43. Thomas Says:

Please do not! Keep working on it, the melody is first class…

  44. Robert Says:

Rolf: you should release songs like this on smaller LPs from time to time. You get money for your work and we get what we need as well :-) Win-Win.

  45. Thomas Says:

    Good idea….

  46. Rolf Says:

you mean special style EPs… one EP with trancey stuff like this, one EP with hardclubsound like some other early postings… hm… if this direct way of distribution works it might be possible because i only need a few hundred sales to pay for the cd production…

  47. Robert Says:

yes, thats what i meant. i would gladly buy these EPs even on audio CDs produced by you at home with a CD burner (in case multiple hundreds can not be sold and professional CD manufacturing can not be paid)

  48. V-12/Tropyx Says:

This song is awesome and it shouldn’t be deleted etc.!!! We need some classic stuff because Trance cannot be forgotten!

  49. Thomas Says:

What about a download portal? In my opinion there are too many good songs in your drawer to release. 2 € / Song for example…

  50. Rolf Says:

the problem with download portals is that you cant even pay the studio heating with the income they generate - unless you are a big star of course…

iTunes takes 50% and distribution and the VAT (Mehrwertsteuer) have to be paid as well… so you will earn less then 30 cent per download and with some hundreds of downloads you will be paid something that hardly anyone in central europe would work a day for… or lets say that a single plug in i use costs more than this…

but lets first see how THIRTEEN STORIES sells. maybe the word of mouth is generating enough sales so that i can dare to try more releases as real physical CDs…

  51. Yannick Says:

Well, you won’t have to pay VAT for free giva-away-track, he? ;)
Well, at least its more useful to earn a new plugin with a sold track than earning nothing and keeping it away from anyone.
That’s my very simple logic of course.

  52. Robert Says:

Rolf: if everything fails, you could still try to give away these tracks (that would otherwise go into the trashcan) for free, and set up a PayPal donation page. I’m sure there are many of us who would support you with some money from time to time.

  53. entropy Says:

… or send in some firewood in exchange. ;)

  54. Yannick Says:

@ thomas: Guess you know this one:
    http://shopbase.finetunes.net/shopserver/ActionServlet?cmd=labeldetails&labelid=1105031678776

  55. Tomek Says:

    I’ll buy the stuff :)

  56. Koellefornian Says:

yes, I like that sound a lot - I hope, the sale of your new album makes it possible, to put songs like this on an EP. It’s a pity to know a song like this in a drawer ;-)

  57. Martin St. Says:

Great song. Pity it is not on the album. The really cool thing is, although the song might be “ordinary” (as called by Rolf) Trance, it just isn’t. While it might sound similar to other classic trance songs, it just has the little “something” which makes it not-ordinary. Being able to download that (also for money) sounds like a good idea. And well, since you said getting enough money from downloads, you could start an experiment with 2-3 songs to see how many people really pay for it, but you are probably right, if it just are 1000, the 300 euro made of it are surely not enough to cover the expenses of producing it, but i would still give it a try.

  58. Yannick Says:

Well, I don’t know how long it takes Rolf to completely finish a track. But for many people 300 bucks would be worth almost a full working-week.

  59. Thomas Says:

This is still my favorite song, it´s a pity that it is not on the album…

  60. Koellefornian Says:

Yes, it would be nice to get this completely as a “gimmic” *gg*

    :)

    :)

    :)

  61. wolverine Says:

I also hope, that this song has something to do with the new “Rolf” stuff for 2010 :)

  62. cris80dr Says:

I am quite sure that all owners of THIRTEEN STORIES would like to have the final version of this song as a little gift under their Christmas Tree. :-)

  63. lilacfairy Says:

contrary to what I wrote above, this melody has been in my head for a while now and it took me a while to remember where I knew it form. So I guess I was wrong about the “Wiedererkennungswert”. It definitely stuck!
In fact, the melody and the way you build it up makes me want to cry for joy! Not really now, but that’s the emotion I feel from it and it could happen if I was in the right mood.
It would be really nice if you refined it a bit more and finalized it! :)

  64. Rolf Says:

there will at least be one “bonus track” mailed to the buyer of the THIRTEEN STORIES CD this year and i hope to finish this one here, too…

but as far as i can evaluate my business, there wont be many other news until september, sorry…

  65. J Says:

I had missed this song (as I will go with the current terminology and don’t simply refer to it as track). It is beautiful!

  66. J Says:

    Have even.. English grammar..
